Characteristics and rules of the games
(taken from the official Volleyball Playing rules, Schorndorf 1998)

Volleyball is a sport, in which there are 2 teams each with 6 players who play on a 9 x 9 meter court divided by a net. The ball can be played with any part of the body.

The aim of the game is for each team to get the ball to touch the floor on the opposing side of the court whilst adhering to the rules. At the same time they must also try and stop the other team from doing the same to them.

The ball is brought into the game by the server. The ball is served by hitting it onto the other side of the court using either a hand or arm.

A team is allowed to touch the ball three times in order to get the ball onto the other side of the net. A block does not count as the first touch.

A player is not allowed to touch the ball twice once after another (unless the first touch was a block).

The point lasts until the ball touches the floor, goes out of play or a team doesn't manage to return the ball over the net.

A match finishes when a team wins three sets (best of 5).

The first fours sets are played to 25 points, if a decider fifth set is needed it is played up to 15 points. In all sets, in order to win, you need a margin of two clear points. There is no point border, the game just continues.

In the first fours sets, you have two technical timeouts of 60 seconds. These happen when the first team reaches 10 points and then 16 points. In addition to that each team has a 30 second timeout. In the fifth set there are no technical timeouts but to make up for it each team gains another 30 second timeout. Each trainer can make 6 substitutions each set.
